Okay, so, this is long, sorry.
I was thinking about this yesterday, but I noticed how quickly I made this dramatic shift from being balls deep into Pokemon fandom and then suddenly SONIC FANDOM!!!
I was wondering why I did this more quickly than usual, and I realized that… Maybe it’s just because I’ve met all the right people so far, but everyone is far more communicative in Sonic fandom? Perhaps it’s just because tumblr allows for a less awkward approach to meeting new people without feeling like you’re stumbling over yourself to keep a conversation going, idk, but even when it was primarily Pokemon on tumblr, I didn’t feel like people were as friendly and responsive.
I am not saying they aren’t, because I have met fantastic people thanks to Pokemon since I was a kid, but as far as tumblr is concerned, they just felt like reblogs, likes, move on. Never much in replies or communication. Maybe it’s because it’s just a different atmosphere and Pokemon is a little more widely accepted, but I think a lot of random alienation Sonic fans tend to feel makes them that much more appreciative of the nice people they find.
You guys have been those nice people for me. Tumblr is the only place I have to go to make any kind of mutual connection for this particular series. I know maybe two people on plurk that particularly care what I post and even then, there’s never too much to say. It isn’t their main fandom, nor a priority one of sorts, so I feel weird posting anything there anymore. That’s why I always hope someone will join me there so I can post and not feel… idk, stupid or something.
Sonic just means a lot to me. I’ve never posted the confessions, but I always smile at the ones that talk about how something to do with Sonic has bettered or saved their lives. It got me through a lot of shit as a child. Places no child should be or adversities no child should need to face… I had to deal with a lot. The series kept me in check. Kept me going.
Anyway, I guess even just setting aside that emotional connection, it’s mainly because you guys are fantastic. So, uh, thank you. Lots.
